At St John's, we teach phonics using the letters and sounds scheme. This will take place through dedicated phonics sessions daily and each session will phonics on a range of reading and writing skills. The sessions will be interactive and engaging and will include visual, auditory and kinesthetic approaches. Children will learn sounds through rhymes and they will complete follow up learning through their continuous provision and reading and writing sessions. By the end of Year 1, children should be secure in phase 5, ready to progress to Phase 6 and No-nonsense spelling in Year 2. If children are not secure, they will continue to receive catch up support as they progress through school. Our taught sessions are delivered as a whole class and then learning will be differentiated and scaffolded to meet the needs of all pupils. Home colour reading books have been replenished this year so that the books are phonetically decodable and they match the phonics level of teaching they are receiving. In Year 1, children will take part in a statutory phonics screening check. If your child does not reach the expected level, they will retake the check in Year 2.
