PDL - Personal Development Learning
Personal Development Learning (PDL)
At St John’s Primary School, PDL is an important part of our broad and balanced curriculum that includes our Christian values of Love, Courage and Respect and learning behaviours.
PDL is a holistic term that includes:
- Personal, Social and Health education, relationships and sex education- ‘Jigsaw’
- ‘No Outsiders’ programme of study
- Online safety- ‘Project Evolve’ programme of study
- British Values
PDL helps to develop children’s self-esteem and emotional well-being. It helps them to form and maintain positive relationships with others, based on mutual respect, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
No Outsiders is an ethos encompassing the language of acceptance, belonging and inclusion through confident educators, engaged parents and empowered children. The ‘No Outsiders’ vision is to have an inclusive education, promoting community cohesion to prepare young people and adults for life as global citizens.
Intent: Educate and empower the whole school community to show tolerance, respect and acceptance to all. To give all stakeholders a complete toolkit including a shared vision and language to enable them to thrive in our diverse and continuously changing world. Our PSHRE is complimented and supported by our ‘No Outsiders’ curriculum which aims to educate children on the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010 and support them in recognising and challenging prejudicial behaviours.
Implementation: PDL will be of high priority within the St John’s curriculum. This will be planned and taught weekly by the class teachers, using a variety of high quality, approved, published resources. This will supplement the Collective Worship programme which includes the use of ‘Picture News’. All year groups study the same theme at the same time and knowledge and skills are secured and built upon each year. Teachers have the flexibility to adapt the provision to meet the individual needs of their class. Evidence of PDL will be recorded weekly in floor books in EYFS and KS1. KS2 children will also record weekly and have their evidence stored in a dedicated section in their curriculum folders.
Impact: Children have a repertoire of skills and are empowered to support and challenge prejudicial behaviours showing acceptance and respect for all. St. John’s children have the knowledge, skills and understanding they need in order to lead confident, healthy and independent lives to become informed, active and responsible citizens living in modern Britain
